Racquetball Season Updates

I thought this would be a good time to check in with everyone, and provide an update on the current state of racquetball in PA, recap the latest news, and foreshadow what’s to come ahead of the US Open this week!

MRWA/IRT Season Opener

Though not an event in the state, neighbor Maryland played host to the IRT a few weeks ago in Laurel, Maryland. The event went off without a hitch, and started the season off strong for the IRT, as well as for the northeast in general. Many top names from around the area came out to participate. Read a recap of the event here. And, see the results here. Shout out to Tyler Aldinger for winning his first A singles division title! Also Thomas Carter made it to the round of 8 for the first time in his IRT career. Very impressive showing by both players.

US Open

The US Open championships begin this week. It should be an exciting year, with more parity than ever at the pro level. Surely Kane is the favorite, but does the new three-game format help those in such a marathon of an event? We will see.

Several players from Pennsylvania will be making the trip to Minneapolis, as shown below.

Play will begin on Wednesday, and I am sure the IRT will be streaming, as well as others via Facebook.

Thus far, PA has held two USAR membership tournaments with the third and last coming up October 19-21 in York, PA. the first two were a success, and I am personally looking forward to seeing everyone in October. Travis Aldinger and Tim Page will once again play host at the Athletic Club of York, and we will undoubtedly have a great turnout. Sign up here.

One item of note that has changed since last season is an interesting rule change. The referee is now allowed to stop play for screen serves regardless of whether the player receiving serve asks for a call. Previously, the player was required to hold his hand up and hope for a call of agreement from the ref.

If the player does not hold his hand up, and rolls out a return of serve, the referee can still call a screen serve, nullifying the return serve. This could be an interesting point of contention for players going into play.

Lastly, Carl Diaz and I had hoped to organize a One-Wall Outdoor Racquetball tournament this summer, but unfortunately mother nature had other plans, and we were unable to execute due to rain on several occasions. This event will have no affiliation with the PSRA, but the tournament will still be held in Philadelphia, and will be rescheduled for spring 2019.

If you have any questions about anything racquetball, or PA-racquetball related, please don’t hesitate to email the board.

See you on the courts!
