Regional Championships in Pittsburgh
For the second year, Pittsburgh will be hosting the Regional Championship at Alexander’s Athletic Club in Harmarville. We’re hoping for a large draw and have over $1000 in total prize money! This year the $10 weekend USRA membership will be accepted making it much more feasible for players who don’t play multiple sanctioned tournaments. We’re making a few changes to make this year better than the last.
There will be 2 GoPro video cameras filming all the great racquetball action in high definition. All videos taken will be shared on the PA Racquetball YouTube Channel. You’ll be able to share video with your friends/family, watch the matches you may have missed, and even critique the videos you may be in.
Since there are only 5 courts at Alexander’s, we will be trying to make things run as efficiently as possible. Tournament directors will be using a texting system to notify players when the court is ready. We will also be checking in with match progress to see when courts will open up. A TV will be used to display upcoming matches so you can better estimate your start time.

There are a few new rules this year so I’m sorry to all of you that like to play barefoot. Shoes are now required! Playing in socks or bare feet is now against the rules. Leave your iPod at home! No audio devices are allowed during game play unless they are used for hearing assistance. Probably more important and harder to adjust to is the change to Carries. Unintentional Carries are now completely legal. Much of the reason behind this rule change is the fact that it can only be self-called so the only player punished is the honest one. Make sure you practice now so you don’t give up points later! For those open players out there that don’t already know, all USAR sanctioned tournaments will play 2 serves. The 1 serve game will still be played for U.S. National Team qualifiers. For more information on the new rules and the 2013 USAR Rules of Racquetball check out the USRA.org
RREVO (Racquetball Revolution) is a program recently started in the Pittsburgh area for High School players. The program includes certified instructors working with high school students in the summer and after school. The summer camp took place in July with 10 junior players. Gearbox supported the program by providing gear at a discounted price. Of course RREVO is interested in expanding but is in need of groups of players to make things financially possible. If you are interested, please contact RREVO at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hopefully you have noticed all of the changes to the PA Racquetball website. More changes are coming but your suggestions are welcome. Future hopes and dreams include live broadcasting, event submission form, and more.
